Arwen is a three-year-old mongrel who, until last November, was living on the streets of Ioannina in northern Greece feeding on scraps from cooks at the town's hospital.

Jonathan Watts and his fiance Emma Rooney decided to adopt her after they saw many stray dogs while on holiday in Greece.

The couple, from Upper Wardington, got in touch with charity Greek Animal Rescue (GAR) and made the arrangements.

Mr Watts, a quality co-ordinator with Vodafone, said: "In the UK we have fairly well established animal charities but in Greece they don't have any welfare centres to speak of.

"We saw Greek Animal Rescue displaying in Banbury town centre in October last year and were really excited about the idea of getting a dog from over there."

Arwen made the journey from Greece in a minibus along with 16 other dogs setting out for new homes in the UK.

She arrived safely with the couple after a long journey that even included getting caught in an earthquake on the way through Italy.

"She's been no trouble at all, other than chewing part our Sky remote control box, and her confidence grows every day," Mr Watts said.

"We already have a rescue dog from Durham, Bobbi, who's pleased as punch to have a sister to play with.

"It's such a great sense of achievement to know you have taken a dog out of a potentially life-threatening situation."
