Two puppies battered in hospital grounds
On Saturday 6th March 2010, a night watchman at Hatzikosta Hospital in Ioannina was seen battering two puppies with large planks of wood. One subsequently died from the injuries he sustained and the other is in a very serious condition. The time of the crime was estimated to be between 10.30 p.m. and 11.00 p.m but it appears that there is some issue over who was on duty at that time. We know that members of staff, hospital visitors etc. heard the screams and came out to see what was happening. The police were called. Nothing happened and none of the witnesses will come forward to say who committed the crime. Animal welfare only learnt about the incident on Monday 8th March and immediately went to investigate. They heard the puppy instantly on arriving at the hospital. Her cries could be heard all over the hospital grounds. Despite this, no efforts had been made to help her apart from some nurses leaving out milk and bread. The puppy that survived was found semi conscious and curled up on top of the body of her dead brother. She had sustained serious head injuries and was unable to eat or drink. She is about 3 months old. It is a miracle she had survived as long as she did as it had also been raining and been a particularly cold weekend.

UPDATE - 10th March The photo below was taken on 10th March (4 days after the incident) The swelling in her head is starting to subside. She has a good appetite and if the bowl is held for her she can lap up some liquid food and swallow it. She is still very dazed and not in full control of her senses, though. She can stand and take a few steps but without much control of what she is doing. Like a person who is concussed it will take a while before all the bruising in her brain subsides. As you can see her eyes are barely open but despite everything she wants human company and to be held! Please check back for updates. We will keep you informed of her progress.
UPDATE - 20th March Below is an update we received from Mary in Greece who is currently caring for the puppy along with some new pictures. 'The puppy is a lot better but still somewhat dazed and the eyes are problematic. It is early days yet but the pupils are not yet reacting to light properly, the haemorrhage has not cleared completely and the eyes weep continually. These are all symptoms of the head injury and it will be weeks before we know if there is any permanent damage.'
