GAR Dogs available for adoption
There are hundreds of thousands of stray animals in Greece and they all deserve a loving home. Unfortunately we can bring over only a small number due to the expenses involved. Below are photos and details of dogs who are currently ready for rehoming.
If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs, please complete our pre adoption questionnaire form which is available to download in
All GAR dogs are microchipped, vaccinated and sterilised and 'prepared' for entering the UK according to DEFRA requirements. In addition, they are blood-tested for tick-borne and other diseases. These tests are not required under the PETS travel scheme, but we feel they are important to ensure that adopted dogs are healthy.
As we are only able to home check in the South-East, potential adopters must live in the following areas: East and West Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Essex, parts of Kent and Hertfordshire. We will of course consider adopting to homes outside of the South-East providing that we a have a volunteer in your area who are able to carry out a home check.
Rescuing a dog from a shelter is a wonderful way to give a dog a second chance at life, and find yourself a new best friend. But, how do you help start this new relationship off on the right paw? Click HERE for a free guide which walks you through the first seven days of adopting a rescue dog.
Bozo is a true gentleman! Affectionate, funny and loves people and being hugged. He is blind in one eye,
but this does not affect him in any way. He loves country walks and doesn't pull on lead. Doesn't like noise and too much traffic.
Loves to play chase so a large garden would be ideal. He gets on with most dogs, though has been picked on by a few unneutered males. Bozo is 4-5 years old, weighs just over 25kg and a home in the countryside,
with a lovely female to share it with would be ideal.
FREDDY - Before and after a haircut
Freddy is around 3 years old, vey affectionate, loves everything on 2 and 4 legs, appreciates whatever he's given, walks happily on a lead and gets on great with all dogs (although
he has not been tested with cats). He loves human company and would not be happy to be left on his won for too long. He would also appreciate a canine companion.
Can all his dreams come true? he could be on his way to the UK in mid May.
Nelly was a stray when she was found (near Athens) early in March 2013. She was pregnant so was taken to a vet to be aborted and sterilised (it had to be done;
there are far too many unwanted homeless puppies and adult dogs on the streets all over Greece). She was going to be returned to the area where she had been hanging around with other strays,
including her brother Harry. How long could these small dogs survive the harsh life on the streets?! A decision was made that providing their blood tests came back clear,
they would be prepared for homing in the UK. They are both healthy, have already been vaccinated and microchipped and their passports will be in their paws by mid April.
Nelly would benefit from having a canine companion to look up to but ideally we would like to rehome her with her brother Harry.
You can view pictures of the siblings playing together HERE.
Both Nelly and Harry are under a year old and weigh around 11kg.
Harry was a stray when he was found (near Athens) early in March 2013 along with his sister Nelly.
He is just under a year old and weighs around 11kg. He is very friendly and affectionate and gets on great with all dogs.
Harry would benefit from having a canine companion to look up to but ideally we would like to rehome him with his sister Nelly.

HARRY & NELLY
We would love to rehome Harry and his sister Nelly together. They both get on great with all dogs,
although Harry is a bit more shy than his sister. Who would be willing to adopt one or both of these adorable dogs?
Myrtis was rescued in May 2012, after she was found hiding under a lorry (near Athens), having been hit by a car. She was emaciated, dehydrated, infested with ticks and unable to stand on her own.
She was immediately taken to a vet where she remained for several days. Gradually she grew into a beautiful and very affectionate dog. Myrtis, who's around 18 months old, gets on well with other dogs and walks well on lead.
In the photos she looks bigger than she actually is - she weighs less than 20kg.
Leo is around 3 and half years old and weighs 28kg. Yes, he is a big boy, but a real head-turner! He is beautiful inside and out, he just wants to be loved. A farmer used to keep him chained to guard his chickens and ducks, but one day he
decided he no longer needed him and simply stopped feeding him. Thankfully Leo was rescued on time, though he was very malnourished. He was taken to a shelter where he was restored to health, but while many people admired his good looks,
nobody offered to adopt him. He is still at the shelter near Athens, but he is ready to come over at any time. His suitcase is packed and his passport is ready. It would be a bonus for him to be adopted by a family who have a friendly canine
friend for him to play with. Leo's beautiful mane and coat do require regular grooming, but that a small price to pay to have such a handsome dog.
Betty is a beautiful and gentle 14 month old girl, who loves people and gets on very well with all dogs. She weighs 23kg, though in the photo looks bigger than she actually is.
She walks well on a lead, but her English is a bit rusty, although she is being taught simple commands daily (sit, stay etc) but she prefers to play instead!
She has grown up with other dogs (although was abandoned as a puppy), so a home with a canine companion to play with and learn from would be a dream come true for her.
Faidra is one and half years old and was abandoned outside a shelter near Athens when she was just 6 weeks old.
She was scared and cried when picked up, as if even at such tender age she had already known pain and fear of people. As she became older she became more confident,
but is still shy with people she doesn't know. She's very friendly with other dogs, never causing any trouble. She would benefit being adopted by an experienced 'dog person' (or a couple) who already has a
friendly and confident dog but no children. It is not known if she would be OK with cats. Faidra weighs just 12kg.
Heidy was abandoned in a shelter near Athens with her two sisters. A wonderful puppy that grew into a lovely happy lady dog!!
She is one of the nicest dogs in the shelter, who gets on well with all other dogs, loves to be with people and is playful and affectionate. Her only weakness is food.
Give her a treat and she will adore you forever. Heidy is two and half years old, weighs 25 kilos and is very healthy.
She would love to swap her life in a shelter kennel for a comfortable doggy bed in a home she could call her own (well, her adopters' home). She may be a big girl, but she has a big personality too.
Obi is an Orange Belton English Setter, around 3 years old, but still quite puppyish.
He is house-trained and comes to a whistle. He is good with other dogs and children and is generally very affectionate.
He is a happy, confident and sociable dog and very eager to please. He would welcome a canine companion.
As with all Setters, a completely secure garden is essential as is a safe fenced area for training (his recall is good but not utterly reliable yet).
Shadow is a 14 month old Collie-cross. He's people-orientated but gets on well with other dogs, so would like to have a canine companion.
Found as a puppy outside Athens, all he has known is life at a shelter, so living in a house would be a dream for him, but we are sure he would adapt eagerly.
To have a family of his own and hopefully a canine companion to 'show him the ropes' would be ideal for this beautiful dog.
Eddie is a very handsome 2-3 year old boy and weighs around 28kg. He is a calm, affectionate boy, who loves people,
is very sociable with all adult dogs but is not keen on puppies or cats. He would make somebody the most loyal companion and
although he needs a little bit work with walking on the lead (he has lived at a shelter since he was a few months old),
but he's getting there.
MILLIE (blue collar) & VANILLI (pink collar)
Millie and Vanilli are sisters, aged 11 months. They were found as 5 week old puppies last winter, scared and hungry.
The sisters are inseparable and must be homed together. They are playful, affectionate, get on great with all dogs
(not tested with cats but are likely OK) and love cuddles. They are a bit shy with people they don't know, but only in the first few minutes.
Please, will somebody give a home to these two beauties?
Nio was rescued as a puppy and is now about 1.5 years old. He loves people, gets on well with all dogs, but unfortunately doesn't like cats due to
being scratched badly by one when he was a few months old. He is a handsome easy-going dog and he 'walks tall' and he's certainly a head-turner.
