A holiday on the island of Karpathos ...
I have just got back home from a one-week holiday with my wife on Karpathos Island. In the middle of a remote deserted location, 5 km south of Olympos village towards Spoa, we found a puppy dog with a 2 m long chain. The dog seemed to have a leather collar. No name nor owner details were present. |

We could not understand why someone wants to keep their dog all alone in the middle of the wilderness. The puppy could barely reach the water bowl, which had heavy deposits of algae. Nearby, opened (presumably dog food) cans were scattered in the bushes. Also a cannister of water was nearby. We found the dog there the first time on 13th of July 2007 at 13:40. The dog was still there 17:40 the same day when we returned back the same route. We were not sure whether someone was looking out for the dog, so we bought some bones and toys for the dog and returned to see whether the dog was still there on Sunday 15th of July 2007. It was still there. The puppy was delighted to see us. It must be very boring to just lie all alone on one spot in the wilderness. I washed the waterbowl and filled it with some fresh water. I have not been able to identify whether there is some pet rescue organisaiton on Karpathos, but on Crete there at least seems to be. The puppy's future has been bothering both my wife and me. Is there something that can be done? How should the local authorities be contacted? I hope that the puppy is not left to die on its own. Unpleasant observations such as these spoil the memories of the vacations. Sincerely,Mark L. Finland |
