Injured dog left to suffer, Kefalonia

The dog pictured was hit by a car outside Sami High school (Kefalonia) on the 15th July at 9.30am and it was 2.30pm before it was finally put to sleep. The dog had a broken spine.

The high school phoned the council who took the dog to public vets who did nothing – not even a sedative. They said they wouldn’t do anything until they heard from an owner. No owner appeared so the high school then arranged for a private vet to take over the case. They were then told by the public/state veterinary dept that a council employee had been and taken the dog. They eventually found the employee who at first refused to tell them where the dog was, but he finally admitted to leaving the dog in a ditch, near to where the accident had happened. This information was only gained after pressure was applied by the police. The dog was found – nearly dying of thirst.

The high school then tried again to get the council to transport the dog to a private vet – with no success, until eventually one employee agreed to do it. There is some speculation about the deputy mayor having already accepted money for the transport and for any necessary veterinary treatment despite nothing being done.

After being left to suffer for over 5 hours, this poor dog was finally put to sleep by a private vet.
