Dear Sirs,

This letter is regarding a dog in Alikes Zante Greece... I have been to this area twice this year and the same conditions still exhist for this sad animal.

It is tied with rope to a tree with no shelter at all. It barks for long lengths of time both day and night. We suspect for food. The owners own a bar/restuarant in Alikanas, so the dog is left alone for many hours.

On return of its master it goes berserk, and, unless they have any food to give it, it is completely ignored. Not even a friendly word or a pat. When they do decide to bring it food, it is obviusly scrap left over from the restuarant, including lumps of bread. Just poured onto the sand or concrete, even then there are no acts of endearment which it is really craving for.

Now and then, its immediate area is hosed down, the dog is absolutely terrified. It is tethered next to a river, and often jumps down the little wall into the river and I have seen it when the rope is not long enough because it is wrapped around a tree etc and it almost hangs itself. Many times we have seen it eating its own excrement. We collected meaty bones from diners in the hotel one night. The next day, when we knew the owners were out, we took the food round to it and poured it over the fence [for safety] in case it attacked us. It did not seem to know what the steak bones and meat were.

We went down to Alikanas one day to confront the woman. She made out that she could not understand English, despite the fact that she is dealing with English customers most days of the season. Then I saw a smart looking mature Greek about to pass us. So I excused myself and asked him if he could translate for us, which he did. We complained bitterly about her treatment of this dog. The man asked us if this was bothering us, and we said most definately. The the woman answered in English that she would try to do something about it. She never did, and the barking went on and on and on.

When they returned from the bar at about 3 30am the noise was terrible from the animal, it was obviously desparate for food. Local people have tried to do something about it but when they have called the police they say that they cannot do anything about it because it is on private property.,and yet I am told that they would do if they were paid undercover.

I do hope that you can investigate this.

Yours faithfully
Betty and Eric

Hi,

We are coming to the end of a week's holiday in resort of Salandi which is closing down at the end of the season.

The day we arrived a lone kitten bounced into the villa-from her behaviour this has been her home for the few weeks of her life doubtless cared for by guests. We are the last guests here & there are now only a few other people around. We have askd the Greek villa owner & British villa agency to find a home for her as I feel it's their responsibility, asked locals & even a German couple who previously have adoptd 3 strays from here & taken them home in their campervan, but all to no avail.

We cannot meet PET passport timescales: 6 months for rabies etc & are very sad that we have to leave such a young cat to fend for herself through the autumn & winter with no-one around here seeming to care very much.

This is a beautiful but harsh place.
Sarah

Hello

We are in Messolonghi..(sacred city) What a laugh!

Dogs are poisoned and left where they die in the streets. Our beloved dog that we rescued was poisoned. The Marina management didn't care either. We will go to the port police and report it and then contact Brussels.

Hopefully they can put pressure on Greece to become civilised!

Hello,

We have found a dog tied to a small chain that lives in its own excrement. It's terrified of any person approaching and crawls into a little box and doesn't move. There is no evidence of food or water. It is clearly a case of severe abuse and neglect.

We leave on a ferry tomorrow afternoon so we hope you might have a contact in the area. If you have some immediate suggestions please tell us.

We have cleared away the excrement and have been feeding the dog food and water so there is now a bowl and plate. Disturbingly, there were bones and a skull in the same pen that looked like those of a dog.

We tried going to the police today but there was no one to speak to. We will try again tomorrow.

If you would like directions to the location of the dog please let us know.
Scott

Hello,

I have just got back from Lindos (2nd time this year) and every year i leave crying because i always feed the stray cats and dogs down at the beach at the avra apartments or st paul's bay (which i find distressing that i have to avoid it because of the heart ache).

I also get sad about the donkeys, but i have just been on to the donkey sanctuary about the sites i have seen, hopefully they will be able to help.

Anyway, i would like to know if there is anything i can do to help - hands on - is poisoning still taking place at the end of the season (an english friend lives in greece, her german shepherd accidently ate poison and lost his life!!)

I love the holiday destination but it breaks my heart when i leave them, i spend my week feeding kittens etc. i was there 7 weeks ago feeding the babies and seeing them 7 weeks later was so great! but every day they would be at my door, 5 of them. typically just as i was leaving we found 3 kittens, could only be 4 weeks old and i worry about them so much. i have asked the angels to send some human angels to feed them all.

just wish i could do something to help.

Why does my heart feel so bad everytime I visit Greece? Why does my soul feel so bad everytime I visit Greece?

I left a mother cat with two kittens in Zephyros Village on Karpathos last Sunday. Food and water will soon disappear and the tiny and skinny kittens were in bad condition, one with a very bad eyeinfection, he was nearly blind. Dying cats trying to drink water from the ocean, this is what I experienced.

I feel so sick and ashamed on behalf of fellow Greeks, but glad to know that we are many on this planet who care. I was told there is no veterinary care on this island.. what can be done? An animal shelter on Karpathos is very needed. Do you know anything about this?

Human beeings are so cruel and heartless, I want this to end but what can I do? Give me hope please? If I had money I would start an animal rescue there myself, but I don't. Please tell me that something will be done in Karpathos, not just for cats but all animals that need help.

Thank you!
Aud

Hi,

I have been working on a small island in Greece for the last 4 months. Just down the road was a barrel dog which guarded the territory to stop goats and sheep passing, the dog escaped and managed to find the shepard who said he didnt want the dog and would kill it, and so the dog has lived within our community for the last few months.

The complex where I am working closes for the winter and the dog will then be homeless and obviously die, she is so well trained and good natured and would be grateful for any advice on what can be done to rehome her or even take her back to the UK where I would bve willing to take care of her, but I dont have sufficiet funds to do so.

Is there any charities or any other help you can suggest, she has been a part of the place for so long and we are now panicing as to what will happen when there is nobody here to look after her??

Thank you
Paul

Dear sir/madam of Greek Animal Rescue

My name is Diagoras and Im writing you after I've found your contact on the internet, maybe you are my last hope.

A week ago we found a stray puppy 60km out of Athens, near the place Agioi Apostoloi. It seemed to had heart her leg, I fed her with all the other stray dogs, but as she is a puppy she couldn't manage, so we took it personally to give her medical assistance and find her a home.

Her name is Naya, around 8-11 months old, female and weights 13 kg. She is energetic and eating normally her food and drinking water.

We took her to Athens where we went to different vets and clinics, made x-rays and other tests. There are no broken bones but apparently she was hit by a car, and the accident had cause a problem with some nerve, so from since she can't move her leg and drags it to the street with her resulting to injuries. The leg as its a nerve problem might be cured, we already give her some pill medication, but it will need time, months, and of course a home to give her love and shelter.

My family already have a dog which we found 3 years ago on the streets in a bad condition and finally we kept, compromising my mothers and brother allergy to dogs. We would love to keep Naya (thats the name we gave her) but its impossible due to the health problem and further more I will be leaving Europe in mid October and they wont be able to handle two dogs.

I am desperately searching for a home for her, contacted various organizations but no one seems to be able to help.

Would it be possible to help us find a home for Naya? Even abroad, out of Greece, I am willing to take a flight and transport the dog safely to deliver.

If we leave her back on the streets she most probably die, if not from her disability for sure from the poison they are known to throw in that area systematically twice a year to kill the stray dogs.

With all my heart I hope you will be able to help us to save one more dog from the death which awaits on the greek roads.

Thank you very much, looking forward to your communication, I attach some photos of Naya.

I'm Barbara from Slovenia and I'm staying in Stalis, Crete this week.

Yesterday my boyfriend and I drove in Tzermiado (from the main road we turned uphill where it says archeologycal site, Minoan settlement) when we sood spotted a skinny dog by the road. It is middle size, light brown and a little white. It was chained by its hut without ANY water or food!

The dog was so happy when I stopped by and offered it some water and bread which it immediately consumed. It jumped on me and licked my hand. This is clearly animal abuse therefore I would very much like to take it home with me if possible. If that is not possible please come and pick it up! I leave home Saturday so if I'm unable to adopt it until then I would very much appreciate it if you could provide it with a passport and sent it to Ljubljana by plane. I will pick it up there and of course pay for all the expenses. I can also give you some money while I'm still here.

Please contack me as soon as you can. If you cannot help me please forward this message to some other animal unions who can.

Please help!

Hello

We were in Santorini July 4 of this year. It is a beautiful island. We were dismayed, however, that the donkeys were treated so poorly by their caretaker(s).

My daughter took the donkey ride down the mountain and her donkey was bleeding through its blanket. When she brought this to the attention of the man who was in charge of the donkeys, he did not care, and continued to have the donkey cart tourists back up and down the mountain. Others that we traveled with said they saw the donkeys being the whipped.

These animals did not look well cared for. Had we known this beforehand, we would not have let her ride this poor animal. I am concerned that they may not be getting enough water, and are injured and overworked.

Is there anything you can do on behalf of the donkeys to better their situation?

Thank you,
Sincerely,
Barbara

Hello

Do you know of any bodies in that country that look out for the welfare of the donkeys?

I was there last week in Lindos and witnessed several acts of cruelty that have upset me and my family, this includes a donkey being beaten by a large stick because it wobbled when a person too large mounted it and the particularly disturbing witnessing of a donkey being hit (very hard) in the face by a large rock because its legs gave way.

I would very much appreciate any help in bringing this to the attention of anyone who can do something about it.

Many thanks & Best regards
Samantha

Hi

I am hoping that you can help us.

Two weeks ago we found a tiny kitten (eyes still closed) abandoned in the road on the Greek island of Ithaca. We have been feeding the kitten by syringe with goats milk and egg yoke and she is doing really well !.

Is there any possibility that we could get her back to the UK ?. There is a possibility of a couple from London who are permanently based here, being able to take her. We have obviously become extremely attached to her and would love to take her back to Edinburgh with us. We already have 2 dogs and 3 cats.

Any advice on how we could acheive this would be greatly appreciated.

Brian
