40 dogs poisoned in Salamina
|
|
On Sunday 9th August poison was thrown into the back garden of a house in the area of Kaki Vigla on the Greek island of Salamina. 40 dogs lived there with a family who looked after them. They were vaccinated, fed and were kept very clean. 18 of the 40 dogs died. 6 are still receiving treatment at a local vets and are expected to recover. Below is the email GAR recieved to notify us of the tragic poisoning. There are estimated to be over four thousand strays on the island, which is not known to any tourist or anyone wanting to visit Greece, there is wide spread hunger, most dogs have mange from starvation, and if this is not all they get shot, hit, and poisoned daily. In this case, 40 small sized dogs lived with a family, in Kakia Vigla, an area which is not very inhabited. the dogs were well looked after, they had the run of the house with a very large garden, they were vaccinated, and we had started sterilizing them. The old people loved them, and cared for them. they bothered no one, and yet someone threw poison directly into the garden, Nadia rushed to the house as she always has a large amount of atropine at home. 18 of the dogs died, but she saved the rest. We can only try to imagine what went on there, when she called me she was in a pathetic state. We have put out an SOS. but I very much doupt, we will have any help. Everyone knows Salamina, but no one is ever interested in helping. I am sorry for all this but I alone can do very little, and I have been at it for 3 years.
